Spread of Breast Cancer

Three genes related to the diffusion of breast cancer to the brain were identified by the researchers of the United States, which says that the conclusion could help to lead to new treatments.

Diffusion, or metastasis, of breast cancer to the brain occurs typically years after a tumour of centre was removed. The experts say that this suggests that the cancer cells miss at the beginning of capacity penetrating the hmatomninge barrier, which prevents the entry of the cells of circulation and rule the transport of the molecules in fabric of brain.

The new study noted that two genes, COX2 and HB-EGF, are the principal cells of breast cancer for the entry in the brain. Another gene, ST6GALNAC5 - which is normally in activity only in fabric of brain - causes a chemical reaction which creates a coating on the surface of the cells of breast cancer which increases their capacity to surmount the hmatominge barrier.

Our results draw attention to the role of the coating of surface of cells as a participant previously not recognized in the metastasis of brain, and with the use potential dopes to disturb its interactions, Joan Massague, chair of the biology of Cancer and the program of the genetics in the center commemorative of Cancer of Sloan-Kettering to New York City and a medical investigator of institute of Howard Hughes, indicated in a press release of the center of cancer.

The study appears on line in the nature of newspaper.

Preceding research noted that COX2 and HB-EGF are implied in the diffusion of breast cancer to the lungs. The new conclusion, that the genes also play a part in its diffusion with the brain, could explain the association of the brain and the relapse of lung in patients of breast cancer, the researchers indicated.
